The telling of the story of bushfire brigades in Western Australia is long overdue. Ian duck ham goes far beyond a bald historical account of bushfire brigades in the Shire of Mundaring, He tells of the birth pangs of all bushfire brigades in the State. The story goes a long way to explaining the self-help motivation and the consequent pride in their organizations that characterizes our bushfire volunteers.

Bushfire brigades are uniquely Australian and come in all shapes and size. These is no mould from which they all emerge. There is no such thing as a ‘typical ‘bushfire brigade but they share a common genesis.
