Morning Tide If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.—Lao Tzu
Where do we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going?
These simple words form deceptively profound questions that have been voiced since the dawn of creation. Yet how often do we individually search for answers tothese questions? Do we truly quest for that elusive key that will unlock the mysteries within our own hearts? Or are we just collectively waiting and hoping that some day, sooner or later, some genius, scientist or prophet, will come along and provide us with life’s mysterious answers? If we have the courage to dare look inside ourselves and gaze attentively into the inner sanctuary of our heart and soul, we have the potential to discover our own answers to these most fundamental questions: who am I? How did I come to be?
We will all need to discover, in our own ways, answers that explain the meaning of our unique existence.
We are shepherds of an inner wisdom, and these answers already exist deep within us. As we usually look outside ourselves for answers, we tend to lean toward a more corporeal explanation of the world and our purpose in it.
Manipulating the meaning of life, trying to get it to fit into some kind of scientific or religious conceptual design, only segregates mankind further from true spiritual inheritance. When life is understood only from a physical point of view or from a particular religious stance, we risk becoming bound and imprisoned inside a false perception of the world that inevitably hides the key to our true existence. This battle goes on in every one of us. We cleave to fragments of explanations fashioned and formed by the mind but hardly ever behold the heart of the truth.
O fool that I am! In my heart lies the key of Promise.—John Bunyan
In John Bunyan’s existential masterpiece, The Pilgrim’s Progress: From this World to that which is to Come, we are given a vivid, allegorical description of a soul in search of salvation. It is a saga of universal proportions. The protagonist, Christian, decides he must leave his familiar and established life in search of his true spiritual inheritance. During a long and arduous journey through strange lands, Christian struggles to overcome his own uncertainties, fears and superstitions. He tussles with the lures and entrapments of Vanity Fair, his own ego, but nevertheless finds himself imprisoned inside belief systems that form the walls of his Doubting Castle. It is only at the eleventh hour that he discovers he holds the key to spiritual freedom inside his heart.
The key that unlocks our own Doubting Castle is the very discovery of our true spiritual inheritance. When we understand that our mortal nature is irrevocably linked to our immortal soul we free ourselves from our age-old opponent, self-deception. Only then are we able to leave the ego’s walls and bars behind us.
There is a soul revelation and a spiritual revolution calling us to reconnect with our sense of purpose in life and discover the true reason for our being here. Beyond the shores of this world, our collective consciousness, there is a soul at the back of each of us planning and charting a voyage: a quest for spiritual truth; yet rarely do any of us reach this other world. We choose, instead, to stay where we are, basking on the safe shores of familiarity, hoping to be told the meaning of our life by some spiritual teacher or other. We become marooned in our physical existence, no matter how painful that may be. But our soul, our guide, our inner teacher, is always there, somewhere, beseeching, urging us to change our ways, preparing our ship for a greater voyage across a very different ocean.
Only you can discover what your true life’s purpose is, and only you must learn how to be true to that calling. Choosing an easier, more convenient existence will never ultimately work. Even though you can choose to ignore the voice of the soul the effects it will have on your life and your health will finally beg you to listen.
Waiting To Be Born
A seed hidden in the heart of an apple is an orchard invisible.—Kahlil Gibran
If a single apple seed carries the potential to become an orchard, then all creation may begin hidden inside its own microcosm. The soul is a reflection of this apple seed design. The design of the universe is mirrored in all things.
Is the real purpose of our existence to create a higher state of consciousness, allowing us to venture beyond the physical apparent?
To reach the shores of a new understanding we must dare to question our present perception of who and what we are. Let us consider that any whole is greater than the sum of its parts. A Monet painting reflects back to us more than just brush strokes of paint, the physical substance from which it is made. A series of notations from a Mozart score is not the music itself but only a representation of musical sounds. Although we can describe a piece of music by Mozart or a Monet painting we find we cannot ultimately define it. Something inexplicable exists and stirs within each of us, and somehow connects our soul with the soul of the artist. Is there more to us than our corporeal existence; that is, our physical bodies, our thoughts and our emotions? Are we more than the sum of our parts?
We are each a reflection of a divine perfect pattern, and, like the quiescent appleseed, hidden within us there is a universe waiting to be born. | ||
